One of the oldest sections, the Taxation Section, has met regularly since 1984. Today, its members meet for lunch on the second Tuesday of each month to listen to scholars, tax agency leaders and skilled practitioners discuss tax law and administration. Annually, the section gives the Contra Costa Tax Section Award of Excellence to a local tax agency employee who exhibits compassion, objectivity and patience in resolving issues with taxpayers. The section also sponsors one of the most popular presentations at the Bar Association's annual MCLE Spectacular. Among those speaking are ranking members of area IRS offices responsible for examination and collection matters, and the Franchise Tax Board Chief Counsel. Legal ethics, recent tax acts and State Board of Equalization policy and procedures are among the topics covered during the year. Joint meetings with the Real Estate Section, Family Law Section, Bankruptcy and the Conservatorship, Probate and Trust Section round out the year and present tax issues with a focus on different specialty areas. The group is convivial and the food is good. The section invites all interested attorneys, accountants, financial advisors and others to join it for a luncheon meeting or two.
