about the cccba
solo practice & small firm

The Solo Practice & Small Firm Section evolved from the recognition that many sole and small firm practitioners desired and at times needed the camaraderie, intellectual stimulation and informational exchange that attorneys generally find in larger law firms. By having consistent networking and fellowship opportunities, the section has evolve into a collegial organization resembling a "firm," with specialists in various fields both willing and capable to offer assistance to other section members.

The section was launched in May, of 1996, and the concept has been successful under the previous leadership of solo attorneys Leah Weinger and then Magda Lopez.

A partnership has been forged with JFK law school so that solo practice section members have cost-effective and convenient access to legal resources. Section members are entitled to full use of the JFK Law Library.

Solo Practice Section members receive a monthly email newsletter, The Maverick, informing them of upcoming events, providing topical articles and providing a forum for comment and commentary. The section usually has an MCLE luncheon on the third Thursday of each month at JFK Law School and a networking mixer one month of the year.  In addition, the section participates in the Bar's MCLE Spectacular each November.

Section programs highlight issues of interest to solo and small firm attorneys. The lunch  programs have included a number of excellent speakers on such varied topics, including a roundtable discussion on drafting fee agreements, a presentation on law firm newsletters, and programs on Quickbooks and Timeslips.  MCLE Spectacular programs have included panel discussions of how to open a law firm and how to prepare a small firm for death, disability, and disaster. Our monthly meetings are open to both members and non-members.

Annual section dues of $40 include access to the JFK Law Library. Only law students attending JFK Law School may join this section. Affiliates are not allowed.
